Helicid crab

Helicid crab(H. doerjesi)

Crustacea | Varunidae
Helicana doerjesi

Characteristics

The Helicid crab has a slightly triangular carapace which is approximately 1-2 cm wide and has 3 teeth on the anterolateral margins, as well as a diagonal ridge on the branchial region. The frontal region is round with a dent in the center. The lower margin of its eye socket has a granular ridge composed of 13-14 granules, though the female’s is not so apparent. The back of each pereopod and the ventral margin both have setae growing on them. The Helicid crab is active on the edges of grass marshes, and its habitat roughly overlaps that of the Taiwanese marsh crab.

Distribution

The Doerjes’ marsh crab can be seen around grassy mudflats at Gaomei Wetlands.
